Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Pedestrian deaths remain a serious concern across the state of Texas. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, hundreds of lives are lost each year in crashes involving pedestrians. Urban areas, particularly at night or in low-visibility conditions, are especially dangerous for those traveling on foot. Drivers failing to yield or fleeing the scenes of accidents contribute heavily to the toll.
It’s important to be aware of some key factors that make pedestrian accidents especially harmful:
- Lack of Protection: Unlike vehicle occupants, pedestrians are completely exposed during a crash. Even a low-speed impact can cause fatal injuries.
- Head and Brain Injuries: Traumatic brain injuries are one of the most common and severe outcomes in pedestrian crashes, often requiring long-term medical care or resulting in permanent disability.
- Hit-and-Run Behavior: When a driver leaves the scene, the delay in emergency care can make a major difference in survival outcomes. It also complicates legal efforts to hold the person accountable.
- Crosswalk and Signal Issues: Many pedestrian accidents happen when drivers fail to yield at marked crosswalks or run red lights. In some cases, poor signage or low lighting contributes to the problem.
- Driver Inattention: Distractions such as phone use, fatigue, or impaired driving significantly raise the risk of not seeing a pedestrian until it’s too late.
Losing a loved one in this way is heartbreaking. If your family is facing this kind of loss, contact a wrongful death attorney to understand your legal rights. These cases often involve wrongful death claims and should be handled with care and urgency to ensure justice is served.
