El Paso, TX (July 10, 2025) – A motor vehicle accident claimed the life of a 50-year-old Chaparral man on Wednesday evening, July 9, after what investigators believe may have been a medical emergency behind the wheel. According to the El Paso Police Department, Raymond Lee Ervin Massey was driving his 2019 white Chevy Trax SUV near US-54 when the fatal collision occurred.

Preliminary reports indicate that Massey’s SUV exited US-54 onto Gateway North Boulevard near Kenworthy Street at a high rate of speed. The vehicle struck the back of a 2002 gold Chevy Avalanche pickup truck before continuing forward and slamming into a concrete barrier at the intersection. Emergency crews responded swiftly to the crash site and attempted life-saving measures, but Massey sadly succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Chevy Avalanche, a 52-year-old man, was not injured in the collision.

Witnesses shared video on social media showing the aftermath, with bystanders smashing the SUV’s windows to reach Massey as smoke billowed from the vehicle. Investigators with EPPD believe a medical emergency may have triggered the wreck, though the exact cause has not yet been determined. Officials are urging anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the El Paso Police Department at 915-832-4400 or Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477.

According to local statistics, Massey’s death marks the 32nd traffic-related fatality in El Paso so far in 2025.

Our hearts go out to Mr. Massey’s family and friends as they grieve this heartbreaking loss.

Wrongful Death Accidents in Texas

El Paso, TX - Driver Dies After Crash on Gateway North Blvd Near Kenworthy StEach year, Texas families face the unimaginable pain of losing a loved one in tragic roadway accidents. The Texas Department of Public Safety reports hundreds of fatal crashes every year, many of which are caused by medical emergencies, distracted driving, or vehicle malfunctions. While some accidents are unavoidable, families often struggle to cope with unanswered questions and the financial burdens that follow.

Understanding common causes of fatal accidents can help families be aware of the risks. Here are some factors that can lead to wrongful death crashes:

  • Medical Emergencies: Unexpected medical events like heart attacks or seizures can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles. Though often no one is at fault, these tragic incidents underscore the importance of regular health checkups and knowing when it’s safe to drive.
  • Mechanical Failures: Faulty brakes, tire blowouts, or other mechanical failures can turn a routine drive into a tragedy. Regular vehicle maintenance and manufacturer recalls are crucial to preventing these sudden malfunctions.
  • Distracted Driving: A moment of distraction — whether from a phone, the radio, or something outside the vehicle — can lead to fatal crashes. Drivers must remain alert at all times to react quickly to sudden hazards.
  • Speeding: Driving too fast for road or traffic conditions is a leading factor in deadly crashes. Higher speeds reduce reaction times and increase the force of impact, making it much harder to survive a collision.
  • Road Design Hazards: Sharp curves, poor signage, or inadequate lighting can contribute to deadly wrecks. Municipalities have a duty to maintain safe roadways for all drivers.
