El Paso, TX (November 5, 2025) – On Monday, November 3, authorities identified the woman who died after a tragic pedestrian crash in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio. Police confirmed that 71-year-old Ricarda Meza Escobedo lost her life several days after being hit by a vehicle.

The crash happened on Thursday morning, October 24, on the 800 block of Stanton Street near 7th Street. Investigators said a southbound vehicle turned left and struck Escobedo as she crossed the street.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene. Paramedics took Escobedo to a nearby hospital, where she fought for her life for several days before passing away from her injuries.

Investigators with the El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit said the driver failed to yield the right of way. The department continues to review evidence and has not confirmed whether charges will follow.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ricarda Meza Escobedo.

Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Texas

71-Year-Old Woman Identified in Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Stanton StFatal pedestrian crashes remain a growing concern throughout Texas. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, someone dies in a traffic collision almost every two hours, and pedestrians account for a large share of these fatalities. Busy intersections and urban neighborhoods, like those in El Paso, pose especially high risks.

Common causes of fatal pedestrian accidents include:

  • Failure to Yield: Drivers often turn without checking for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
  • Speeding: High speeds reduce reaction time and make crashes far more deadly.
  • Distraction: Texting or looking away for even a second can cause a driver to miss someone crossing.
  • Low Visibility: Dim lighting or parked cars make pedestrians hard to see.
  • Driver Impairment: Alcohol or drugs slow reflexes and cloud judgment.

Pedestrian crashes often cause catastrophic injuries like head trauma, internal bleeding, and multiple fractures. These injuries can quickly turn fatal, even with immediate medical care. Families face overwhelming emotional pain, medical costs, and funeral expenses while trying to make sense of their sudden loss.

Beyond grief, surviving family members often struggle with financial hardship. The loss of a loved one’s income, guidance, and companionship can affect a family for years to come.

When a pedestrian is killed in a crash, surviving relatives may file a wrongful death claim under Texas law. Compensation can include medical and funeral expenses, loss of financial support and future income, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship.

Taking legal action cannot undo the loss, but it can bring accountability and provide the resources needed to begin healing. Quick action helps preserve vital evidence and strengthens the case against the responsible party.

A brave wrongful death lawyer can investigate the crash, gather key evidence, and negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf. Skilled legal support ensures that families are treated fairly and receive the full value of their claim.
