El Paso, TX (November 21, 2025) – A Horizon man died after a violent head-on crash on Thursday, September 20, near Homestead Meadows South. The crash occurred just before 7:00 a.m. in the 2500 block of North Ascencion Street, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Special Traffic Investigators responded to the scene to examine the crash site and gather evidence. Officials report that a Freightliner dump truck traveled northbound in the area as 34-year-old Benjamin Caballero De Anda drove a pickup truck southbound.
Investigators say wet road conditions caused the Freightliner driver to lose control. The truck skidded across the center line and slammed head-on into De Anda’s pickup. The impact left De Anda critically injured. First responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this tragic crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Benjamin Caballero De Anda during this painful time.
Head-On Collisions in Texas
Head-on collisions often cause the most severe and deadly outcomes on Texas roadways. These crashes involve extreme force because two vehicles move directly toward each other at the moment of impact. When a commercial truck, such as a dump truck, strikes a smaller pickup, the results can be especially devastating. Families may suffer deep emotional pain and sudden financial hardship after a fatal crash.
Wet roadways increase the risk of skidding, hydroplaning, and loss of control. Drivers may struggle to stop in time or maintain traction, especially when operating heavy vehicles like Freightliner dump trucks. Even a brief loss of control can send a vehicle into an oncoming lane, as seen in this tragic crash.
Texas sees many fatal head-on collisions each year, and investigators often link these crashes to factors such as:
- Wet or slick pavement, which reduces tire grip and increases stopping distances. Drivers often underestimate how quickly their vehicle can slide during rainy conditions.
- Large commercial trucks, which require more time and distance to slow or stop, especially during storms or wet weather. The size and weight of these trucks make any collision far more destructive.
- High-speed roadways, where drivers travel faster and have less time to react when another vehicle crosses into their lane. These conditions can lead to severe injuries and significant damage.
When a family loses a loved one in a crash involving a commercial truck, the legal process can feel overwhelming. Responsible parties may include the truck driver, the trucking company, or even maintenance contractors, depending on what the investigation reveals.
