El Paso, TX (July 2, 2025) – A young motorcyclist has lost his life following a heartbreaking T-bone collision near the University of Texas at El Paso. According to the El Paso Police Department, the crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. on July 1, along the 2500 block of North Mesa Street, near the intersection with Robinson Avenue. Officers with the Special Traffic Investigations unit were called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Authorities say a small SUV was exiting a private driveway and attempting to enter North Mesa Street when it was struck by a motorcycle heading northbound. The impact of the crash was severe, leaving the rider, identified by EPPD as 24-year-old Cody Arthur McCuan, with critical injuries. McCuan was rushed to an area hospital but sadly did not survive. The SUV driver was unharmed in the incident. A preliminary investigation suggests that failure to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign by the SUV and possible excessive speed by the motorcyclist may have contributed to the crash. The Texas Department of Public Safety and local authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Cody Arthur McCuan during this difficult time.

Motorcycle Accidents in Texas

El Paso, TX - Motorcyclist Killed in T-Bone Crash on N Mesa StMotorcycle accidents in Texas remain a major concern for riders and other drivers alike. Each year, thousands of motorcyclists are injured or killed on Texas roads, with many of these tragic crashes happening at intersections or when other drivers fail to yield. These collisions can be life-altering for victims and their loved ones, leaving families to face emotional pain and unexpected expenses.

Learning about common causes of motorcycle crashes can help drivers and riders stay safer on the road. Below are some important points to understand:

  • Failure to Yield Right-of-Way
Many motorcycle accidents occur when other drivers fail to yield when merging, turning left, or entering traffic. These mistakes can lead to devastating T-bone collisions, often putting motorcyclists at greater risk due to their lack of protection.
  • Speeding and Reckless Driving: Excessive speed is another frequent factor in motorcycle crashes. Speeding reduces a rider’s reaction time and increases the force of impact in a collision. Riders and other motorists alike should always follow posted speed limits and adjust their speed to match road conditions.
  • Limited Visibility: Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see than other vehicles. Drivers must check blind spots and use extra caution at intersections. Riders can increase their visibility by wearing bright gear and using their headlights, even during daylight.
  • Unsafe Lane Changes: Sudden lane changes without proper signaling or checking mirrors can be deadly for motorcyclists. Drivers must always use turn signals and look twice to ensure the lane is clear before moving over.
  • Road Conditions and Hazards: Potholes, debris, or slick roads can pose greater risks for motorcycles. Riders should remain vigilant and prepared to adjust to unexpected hazards, while cities should maintain roadways to reduce these dangers.
