Socorro, TX (June 29, 2025) – A man lost his life in a deadly motorcycle collision in Socorro early Saturday morning. On June 28, at approximately 1:25 a.m., the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 11100 block of Socorro Road after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle accident.
According to a statement released by Sheriff’s spokeswoman Priscilla I. Contreras, Filbert Candelaria, 32, was riding eastbound on Socorro Road when his motorcycle collided with a Nissan passenger vehicle. Sadly, Candelaria died at the scene from his injuries. The occupants of the Nissan were not hurt in the crash.
The Socorro Police Department initially responded and secured the area before the Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigations Unit took over due to the severity of the incident. Deputies closed a portion of Socorro Road while they gathered evidence and spoke with witnesses to determine the factors that led to the collision. The Texas Department of Public Safety is also assisting with the investigation. As of now, no further details have been released regarding what may have caused the crash. Authorities urge anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward with information.
Our thoughts are with Filbert Candelaria’s family during this difficult time.
Motorcycle Accidents in Texas
Motorcycle collisions in Texas often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the limited protection riders have compared to enclosed vehicles. According to recent reports, hundreds of riders lose their lives each year on Texas roads. It is vital for all drivers to stay alert and share the road safely with motorcyclists.
Below are some important points about how motorcycle accidents happen and how they can be prevented:
- Limited Protection: Motorcycles provide little to no protection in a crash, making riders more likely to suffer life-threatening injuries. Helmets and protective gear can reduce the severity but cannot prevent all injuries.
- Nighttime Risks: Riding at night can be more dangerous due to reduced visibility. Drivers may not see motorcyclists in time to react, especially on poorly lit roads.
- Speed Factors: Excessive speed is a common factor in fatal motorcycle crashes. Riders and other drivers should obey posted speed limits and adjust for conditions like wet roads or curves.
- Intersections and Turns: Many motorcycle crashes occur when other vehicles turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle. Drivers must yield properly and double-check blind spots before making turns.
- Investigation Process: After a deadly crash, local agencies and the Texas Department of Public Safety conduct thorough investigations. These findings can help families understand what happened and may support any legal claims.
- Legal Options: Families who lose a loved one in a motorcycle collision may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim to help with funeral costs and other financial burdens.
