El Paso, TX (September 8, 2025) – A 52-year-old bicyclist, identified as David Carmine O’Conner, tragically died after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning, September 7, in Central El Paso.

According to the El Paso Police Department, the crash occurred around 1:40 a.m. on the 4600 block of Pershing Drive. O’Conner was struck from behind by a vehicle, which caused him to be dislodged from his bicycle.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene, leaving O’Conner with fatal injuries.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, but O’Conner was later pronounced dead from his injuries at a nearby hospital. Police are investigating the incident and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver involved.

Authorities believe the vehicle involved was a gray or silver car, possibly a Kia, with damage to the front grill. The El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate this tragic hit-and-run.

Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of David O’Conner during this difficult time.

Hit-and-Run Accidents in El Paso

Hit-and-run accidents are devastating for victims and their families, especially when the driver involved leaves the scene without offering assistance. In pedestrian and bicyclist accidents, the injuries can be catastrophic, and victims often face life-threatening harm because they lack the protection offered by vehicles.

Some common factors that contribute to hit-and-run accidents include:

  • Driver negligence – Drivers may be impaired by alcohol or drugs, distracted, or simply fail to notice cyclists on the road. When drivers are responsible for an accident, they may choose to flee to avoid responsibility.
  • Speeding or reckless driving – Drivers who speed or drive recklessly are more likely to cause accidents, and they may not stop after a crash due to fear of the consequences.
  • Lack of awareness – Some drivers do not see cyclists, especially at night or in poorly lit areas. Even slight distractions can cause serious accidents with fatal consequences.
  • Inadequate law enforcement response – In some cases, the authorities may have trouble locating the responsible driver, especially if the vehicle involved is not immediately identifiable.

Victims of hit-and-run accidents often suffer devastating consequences, both physically and emotionally. Families of those killed in such incidents may pursue wrongful death claims to seek compensation for funeral expenses, medical bills, and emotional distress.

Consulting with a wrongful death lawyer can provide critical guidance in seeking justice for the victim and ensuring that the responsible party is held accountable.
