El Paso, TX (September 28, 2025) A 21-year-old man died on Friday night, September 26, after a car struck him on Interstate 10.

The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. when a vehicle hit Kevin Lopez-Vazquez in the westbound lanes of I-10. First responders rushed to the scene and tried to save him, but he died from his injuries.

Investigators shut down all westbound lanes for several hours overnight as they gathered evidence and worked to understand what happened. Police confirmed the driver was operating a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta. No word has been shared on whether the driver will face charges or citations.

Authorities continue to review how the collision occurred and whether speed, distraction, or impairment played a role.

We extend our deepest condolences to Kevin Lopez-Vazquez’s loved ones during this heartbreaking time.

Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Texas

Pedestrian Killed in Crash on I-10 W Near Geronimo Dr

Fatal car accidents in Texas remain a serious public safety challenge. In 2023, there were about 4,254 traffic deaths reported—down slightly from previous years, but averaging roughly one fatality every two hours and four minutes. Nearly 558,000 reportable crashes occurred in that year, causing over 250,000 injuries. Despite ongoing safety efforts, the state continues to rank high nationally in traffic-related fatalities.

The leading causes of fatal crashes in Texas include speeding (particularly failing to control speed), driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and distracted driving (such as using cell phones while driving).

Other contributors are failure to yield the right-of-way, loss of vehicle control, and aggressive or reckless driving. These factors often combine with high traffic volumes and long travel distances, increasing the risk of deadly outcomes on Texas roads.

Pedestrian crashes in Texas often lead to devastating outcomes, especially on high-speed highways like I-10. At night, drivers have less time to react, and a single mistake can end in tragedy.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), more than 5,700 pedestrian crashes happen statewide every year, with over 800 deaths. Many involve speeding, distracted driving, or drivers who fail to yield.

Losing someone so suddenly leaves families grieving while facing funeral costs, lost income, and overwhelming uncertainty. While no amount of money can replace a life, a wrongful death claim can help hold negligent drivers accountable and provide financial stability for the future.

If you lost a loved one in a pedestrian accident, it’s critical to speak with a brave wrongful death lawyer in El Paso immediately. An attorney can investigate the crash, preserve key evidence, and fight for the compensation your family deserves.
