Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Pedestrian safety remains a major concern across Texas. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, over 800 pedestrian fatalities occurred in 2023, with thousands more injured. Many of these incidents happen along highways or major roads where pedestrian access is limited and drivers may not expect foot traffic.
Here are several reasons why these accidents remain common:
- High-speed roadways near pedestrian areas: Pedestrians struck on highways often suffer severe injuries due to the speed of traffic. Roadways like Highway 80 are not designed with pedestrian safety in mind.
- Poor lighting conditions: Visibility drops dramatically at night, especially in areas without proper lighting. Pedestrians walking near highways may be nearly invisible to oncoming traffic.
- Lack of pedestrian crossings or walkways: Without designated crosswalks, pedestrians may be forced to cross in unsafe locations. This increases the risk of accidents, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Distracted driving: Drivers looking at their phones, adjusting music, or simply not paying attention can easily miss seeing a pedestrian, especially in low-visibility situations.
- Quick emergency response and trauma care: When serious injuries happen, the presence of EMS or airlift support like CareFlite can make a significant difference in survival and recovery outcomes.
