According to officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2020 Dodge Durango was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 2018 Mercedes CLA250. One person died at the scene. Three others were rushed to area hospitals for emergency treatment, and a second victim died from their injuries a short time later.
The driver of the Dodge Durango sustained serious injuries. Authorities suspect that intoxication may have played a role in the crash. As of now, the investigation remains ongoing, and the names of the individuals involved have not yet been released.
We send our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragic incident.
Car Accidents in Texas
Texas sees more wrong-way crashes than most states, particularly on highways and toll roads. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, these types of accidents are rare but often deadly, accounting for some of the most catastrophic collisions on state roadways.
Understanding what makes these accidents so dangerous can help bring awareness. Here’s what you need to know about wrong-way collisions:
- High Impact Forces: Wrong-way crashes almost always involve head-on impacts at high speeds. The combined speed of both vehicles often results in fatal injuries or permanent disability for those involved.
- Impaired Driving: A majority of wrong-way drivers are found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired judgment and delayed reaction times are major contributing factors.
- Low Visibility and Confusion: Many wrong-way drivers enter highways via exit ramps, often during nighttime hours. Poor signage or road design can also play a role in driver confusion.
- Passenger and Bystander Risk: Innocent drivers and passengers are often caught off guard and have little time to react. These victims are frequently the ones most seriously injured.
- Legal Consequences and Civil Claims: Crashes involving suspected intoxication can lead to both criminal charges and civil lawsuits. Victims or their families may pursue compensation through a wrongful death or personal injury claim.
