Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Texas continues to rank among the most dangerous states for pedestrians. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, one out of every five traffic fatalities statewide involves a pedestrian.
Hundreds of people lose their lives every year in pedestrian crashes. Many of these tragedies happen at night, when visibility is low and reaction times are slower. Urban areas like Plano face even greater risks because of wide intersections, heavy traffic, and limited pedestrian protections.
The most common causes of fatal pedestrian accidents in Texas include:
- Distracted Driving: Phone use and in-car systems take drivers’ focus off the road.
- Failure to Yield: Many crashes happen when drivers ignore a pedestrian’s right-of-way.
- Low Visibility: Poor lighting and nighttime conditions make it harder to see pedestrians.
- High-Speed Roads: Faster-moving vehicles cause more severe and often fatal injuries.
- Traffic Growth: Increasing congestion on Texas roads raises the risk of pedestrian crashes.
When these crashes occur, the results are often catastrophic, as pedestrians have no protection against large vehicles.
For families who lose a loved one in a pedestrian crash, the emotional toll is overwhelming. Beyond grief, they may face hospital bills, funeral costs, lost income, and the loss of companionship.
When negligence contributes to a fatal crash, families may pursue justice through a wrongful death claim. Compensation can help cover expenses, replace lost wages, and provide financial stability during recovery.
